I don't know why lava lamps went out of style. They're still pretty cool in my book.
I've been thinking about getting my own and then I stumbled on another cool reason the hypnotic decoration is worth it. The web security company Cloudflare uses an array of lava lamps to to keep hackers away:
“Computers, relying as they do on human-coded patterns, can’t generate true randomness—but nobody can predict the goopy mesmeric swirlings of oil, water, and wax. Cloudflare films the lamps 24/7 and uses the ever-changing arrangement of pixels to help create a superpowered cryptographic key. ”
